TIPS FOR KYOTO

“Making our historic districts safer for all by improving disaster preparation measures and looking after stray cats.”

by Community cat KYOTO / Crime and disaster prevention liaison and consultation group

“Making our historic districts safer for all by improving disaster preparation measures and looking after stray cats.”

Kyoto’s shopping districts have long been places of bustle and excitement. They are also increasingly drawing in international visitors. However, the disaster prevention measures haven’t kept pace and it is leaving both locals and visitors at risk. We are raising money to provide disaster preparation education and tools, as well as addressing the problem of stray cats humanely by providing treatment and shelter.

(What We Do)

A temple town that has existed alongside the temple.
Fostering mutual assistance among town cats and disaster prevention

The foundation for “disaster prevention and prosperity” in Kyoto’s historic districts was laid approximately 450 years ago. We continue to protect these historic areas and welcome people from all over the world as an international tourist city.

However, while the town is bustling, we must also take it upon ourselves to pioneer the next generation of disaster prevention measures to protect the safety of residents and tourists. We will raise disaster prevention awareness throughout the region through dialogue that transcends boundaries, and in the fall of 2026, we will start by holding a disaster prevention event for parents and children at the temple.

In addition, to address the local issue of stray cats, we have established a private organization and will begin supporting partner organizations in Kyoto that promote community cat activities based on rules. These activities, which aim to coexist with stray cats while respecting life, require the understanding and cooperation of the local community.

We sincerely ask all hotels and tourism businesses that support our activities to cooperate with the establishment of TIPSFOR. We ask all tourists to support us.

(Our Story)

A Shared Vision for the Future

Protecting what we cherish, living in harmony, connecting our hearts, and creating the future together.

There are people, living creatures, landscapes, crafts, cultures, and histories that I hold dear and wish to protect. My hope is to shape their future alongside everyone who touches this land—those who live, work, and study here, as well as those who visit and support us from afar. I truly wish to connect with those who share this vision and pass these treasures on to the next generation.

In a world of constant change—shogyo mujo—what never loses its radiance is the trust between people. The wellspring of that trust is found in local community actions. Among these, the roles I have been entrusted with are the care of community cats, as well as the safety and disaster prevention of our neighborhood.

Together with all of you, I hope to create a town where we are kind to every living soul, and where everyone can live with a peaceful heart.

VOICE (Encouragement from the Community)

  • I am deeply moved by Mr. Koide’s sincere character and his unwavering dedication to addressing local challenges, step by step, through his grassroots activities.

Historically, Seigan-ji Temple stood at the very heart of this community. This initiative—strengthening local disaster resilience by collaborating with the temple and engaging a diverse range of local players—is a pioneering model that opens up new social possibilities for temples across Japan. You have my heartfelt support.

    TURUNO KOYU

  • “It has been about five years since we first met at a local business consultation. Seeing how Mr. Koide has consistently continued his efforts, evolving them into this unique initiative that links community cat welfare with disaster prevention, provides a brilliant roadmap for how local businesses can contribute to society. I am wholeheartedly cheering you on!”
