TIPS FOR KYOTO

“Join us in preserving the timeless beauty and local harmony of the Kiyomizu district.”

by UPCYCLE LIFE HIGASHIYAMA

“Join us in preserving the timeless beauty and local harmony of the Kiyomizu district.”

SIGHTS KYOTO, located in the heart of Higashiyama, was the very first to embrace and help shape the "TIPSFOR Donation Box" vision.

While Higashiyama enchants visitors from around the globe, it also faces the delicate challenges of overtourism and the preservation of its residents' quiet daily lives. We believe that travel should not be an act of consumption that wears a region down, but a regenerative force that nurtures the future alongside the community.

In this historic district where the essence of Kyoto lives on, we are dedicated to transforming the goodwill of travelers into a lasting legacy for the region’s future.

(What We Do)

“Redefining tourism as a shared journey: where we work hand-in-hand with our guests to turn every challenge into a positive legacy for the future.”

Based in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, this initiative brings together hotels, local government, businesses, residents, and travelers to transform the challenges of tourism into lasting value for the future. Our goal is to move beyond “consumption” and build a system that ensures our local culture, way of life, and environment are preserved and enriched for generations to come.

Through this project, we lead the following actions:

Community Care & Beautification: Joint clean-up activities involving residents, accommodation partners, and travelers to keep our streets beautiful.

Cultural Connection & Learning: Creating opportunities for meaningful exchange and deep learning between visitors and the local community.

Awareness & Respect: Promoting cultural understanding and mindful travel etiquette to foster mutual respect.

Sustainable Area Management: Implementing practices that utilize public spaces and local resources to enhance the vitality of the entire neighborhood.

(Our Story)

Let us nurture a community where both residents and travelers can say: ‘We are truly glad that tourism and our hotels are here.

Travel has the power to shift our perspectives and transform our lives. It allows us to encounter breathtaking landscapes, touch the soul of different cultures, and forge unexpected human connections. At its essence, tourism should not be an act of consumption, but a journey of mutual growth between the traveler and the land.

In recent years, however, Kyoto’s Higashiyama district has faced the heavy burden of overtourism. Rising crowds and environmental strain have begun to fray the quiet daily lives and peace of mind of our residents. It is a painful truth that some have begun to feel that visitors are no longer welcome.

Yet, we still believe in the power of travel. By placing our trust in the goodwill of our guests and creating a system where that kindness circulates back into the community, we believe tourism can once again become a source of pride and prosperity for the town.

Our mission is to bridge the hearts of those who visit Higashiyama and those who live here—realizing a future where everyone can truly feel, “I am so glad tourism is here.”
